We recently worked through the structural design of a four-story wood framed apartment. The strength of the wood walls was limited because of the large number of window openings. By utilizing the strength of the existing subfloor and masonry stair shafts, we were able to reduce the lateral load on the exterior wood walls. This saved the owner time and money by allowing the walls to accommodate significant openings without adding additional cost or complexity to the wall construction.
