Thursday Pro Tip |  Zip System vs. LP WeatherLogic: Choosing the Best Sheathing for Your Build

When it comes to modern construction, air and water resistance are non-negotiable. Builders are moving away from traditional house wrap and opting for engineered sheathing systems that offer built-in weather protection. Two of the most popular options in the industry are Huber’s Zip System® Sheathing and LP WeatherLogic® Sheathing.

But which one is best for your project? Let’s break down the similarities, differences, and key advantages of each.

 Understanding the Basics

Both Zip System Sheathing and LP WeatherLogic Sheathing are OSB (oriented strand board) panels with built-in water-resistant barriers. These systems provide a strong structural base while also acting as an air and water barrier—removing the need for traditional house wrap.

However, while they share some similarities, they differ in installation process, durability, and long-term performance.

Zip System® Sheathing

Key Features:

- Structural OSB panel with an integrated water-resistant membrane

- Requires Zip Tape or Zip Liquid Flash to seal panel seams

- Designed to replace house wrap for better air and water control

- Comes in 1/2-inch, 5/8-inch, and 7/16-inch thickness options

- Provides a continuous air barrier when properly installed

 Pros of Zip Sheathing:

  • Proven track record – Zip System has been widely used and tested in various climates.

  • Waterproofing customization – Zip Tape or Liquid Flash gives flexibility in sealing.

  • Energy efficiency – Helps with airtight construction, reducing thermal leaks.

 Potential Drawbacks:

  • Tape-dependent – If seams aren’t properly taped or flashed, water intrusion can become an issue.

  • Labor-intensive – Proper tape application requires attention to detail to ensure a watertight seal.

 LP WeatherLogic® Sheathing

Key Features:

  • OSB panel with a factory-applied water-resistant overlay

  • Taped seams using WeatherLogic Seam & Flashing Tape

  • Offers moisture shedding + permeability for drying potential

  • Meets structural + water management standards in one step

  • Built for impact resistance and long-term durability

 Pros of LP WeatherLogic Sheathing:

  • Fully integrated overlay – A continuous barrier covers the entire panel, reducing risks of improper taping.

  • Permeability – Allows moisture to escape, which can help prevent mold and rot.

  • Strong impact resistance – Built to handle high-stress applications.

 Potential Drawbacks:

  • Less customization at seams – The factory overlay means the entire system relies on WeatherLogic Tape for sealing.

  • Less market saturation – LP WeatherLogic is newer than Zip, meaning fewer long-term field studies.

Which One Should You Choose?

  • If you prefer a well-established system with proven performance, Green Zip is a solid choice—just make sure your tape/flashing application is perfect.

  • If you want a more straightforward installation with an integrated barrier, LP WeatherLogic may be the better option.

  • Consider climate—if you need vapor permeability for drying, WeatherLogic offers better breathability.

At the end of the day, both systems offer strong air and water protection and are miles ahead of traditional house wrap. The right choice depends on your build’s climate, installation team’s experience, and long-term performance goals.
